The Goldstone Commission
Goldstone Commission of Inquiry Regarding the Prevention of Public Violence and Intimidation, known as the Goldstone Commission, is one of the first quasi-judicial body established by apartheid regime to investigate public violence incidents and intimidation in South Africa prior to the 1994 general election.
Justice Richard Goldstone was appointed Chair of this Commission on 24 October 1991. President Nelson Mandela supported the Goldstone Commission with the assistance of the Government of Norway in 1992, to set up an effective monitoring of the politically based public violence that threatened South Africa transition from apartheid to a non-racial democracy. Besides HURISA and the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, the Goldstone Commission Collection is archived at the Nelson Mandela Memory Centre, South Africa Historical Archives and South Africa Human Rights Commission.
